Dr Lorraine Portelli, the Principal Investigator of TRACtion, from the University of Malta recently hosted Dr Kathryn McSweeney, a lecturer in Education from the Atlantic Technological University (ATU) in Ireland and a researcher in textiles, fashion, and design, for a two-day workshop on the design process and creativity in textiles.
Bringing together B.Sc. Home Economics students and Fashion & Textiles educators, the workshop focused on how design concepts can evolve sustainably—from inspiration to product. A key highlight included working with traditional Irish lace, using magnification and sketching techniques to reinterpret historical patterns in modern, eco-conscious ways.
Through visual thinking and hands-on sketching activities, participants explored upcycling, embellishment techniques, and sustainable design processes—fostering creative strategies and their application in developing innovative responses. This international collaboration marks a significant step towards shaping a more sustainable future in fashion and textiles education.
