ATU St Angelas TRACtion Team – TRACtion Creative Competition in Schools

Dr Mcsweeney @atustangelas launched an Art Competition during the recent TRACtion exhibition. Shortlisting was no easy task, given the exceptional quality of the 288 entries from 12 schools. The shortlisted entries were scrutinised for their creativity, originality, and execution. The panel considered factors such as the novelty of ideas, the use of space within the designs, the imaginative choice and use of media and ideas, and the ability to capture attention. They also evaluated the input level per design, quality, balance, colour combination, and emotional impact. The judges were impressed with the quality of the outcomes. The responses were original and free and included a sensitive use of pattern and colour. Older participants reimagined the designs. The final pieces included landscapes and other interpretations almost unrecognisable from the original designs. New patterns were created within the lace design and in the background, which was unique.

The entries received from primary school children have helped revive and innovate traditional Irish textile designs. The competition stimulated personal interest in textiles and traditional costume and craft design.
