ATU St Angelas TRACtion Team – TRACtion Creative Seminar

ATU St Angelas recently welcomed Creative Europe TRACtion research partners from the University of Malta and the University of Helsinki to Ireland.

The week ended with a fascinating Seminar entitled Activating Design Thinking, Creativity and Innovation Using Traditional Costume Techniques. Presenters included Prof Riikka Räisänen, Dr Kathryn McSweeney and Dr Lorraine Portelli. An enthusiastic audience attended the event and were fascinated by stories of the Għonnella, its origin, use and significance in Maltese culture, Karelian folk costumes, which revealed information about family groups and social status, and Irish costumes with whitework embroidery and traditional lace techniques.

The costume structural details have been analysed, pattern specifications created, patterns recorded, and motifs digitised for future use in educational and artistic contexts.
