One of the most interesting parts of the Maltese national costume is the stiffened section of the Għonnella which is made from special cardboard, stitched meticulously and covered in fabric. Dr Lorraine Portelli, who is the lead coordinator of the project TRACtion, together with Doreen Schembri and Maryanne Falzon, deconstructed a worn out Għonnella to gain an in-depth analysis and understanding of how this part was constructed. Flat sketches were made by Nicole Vella who also digitalised them to scale using CAD.
